Club Competitions Overview

Sunshine Coast Skindivers runs a mix of season-long, online and monthly club competitions designed to encourage safe, selective and social spearfishing across all experience levels. Competitions are structured to recognise individual performance, pair diving, teams, juniors and women, while encouraging members to target a broad range of legal species throughout the year.

Big 10 Competition

The Big 10 is a season-long online competition made up of 10 separate fish categories. Members can submit up to two entries per category.

Each category is scored from the largest fish to the smallest fish, with points awarded based on the ranking of entries. The aim is to build the strongest overall score across the full range of categories, rather than relying on a single catch.

At the end of the competition, the member with the highest total points across all categories is declared the overall Big 10 winner.

Monthly Club Competitions & Social Days

Monthly club competitions are held as social dive days and are run in a pairs format. These competitions are based on species and weight, with members allowed a maximum of one entry per species.

Each competition produces results for:

  • individual competitors;
  • pairs;

Scores from each monthly competition are converted into a percentage of the highest score for that event. This means the top score receives 100 points, and all other competitors or pairs receive points between 0 and 100 based on their result.

Season winners are determined by the highest total points at the end of the year. A maximum of six competitions count towards the season tally. If a member competes in more than six events, only their best six results are included.

Grades

Club competitions are divided into three grades:

  • A Grade
  • B Grade
  • C Grade

All new divers begin in C Grade. At the end of each season, 1st and 2nd place in each grade move up to the next grade for the following year. This system helps keep competition fair and gives newer divers a clear pathway to progress through the club.

Women and Juniors

In addition to the main competition results, the club also keeps track of results for women and junior competitors. This helps recognise participation and achievement across the broader club community.

Team Competition

The team competition runs across the season. Teams are made up of four members and are nominated at the start of the year. Members who do not nominate a team may be assigned to one.

The team competition is based on the largest number of unique species recorded by the team during the year. This encourages variety, consistency and teamwork across the season, rather than simply targeting the biggest fish.

Interclub Competitions

Sunshine Coast Skindivers also takes part in interclub competitions, which are usually held once or twice per year. These events are a great opportunity to dive with members from other clubs, build relationships within the wider spearfishing community and enjoy a friendly but competitive club-versus-club format.

Interclub events may be held at either club’s home location or at a neutral third-party location, such as Moreton Island. One example is the annual interclub competition between Tweed and Sunshine Coast, which brings both clubs together for a social weekend of diving and competition.

Where possible, Sunshine Coast Skindivers will also run a regular club competition alongside the interclub event, allowing members to earn club points while also contributing to the interclub result. As with all club competitions, these events are run with a focus on safety, selective fishing, good sportsmanship and respect for other divers, clubs and local regulations.

Competition Spirit

All Sunshine Coast Skindivers competitions are intended to promote safe diving, selective fishing, good sportsmanship and club participation. Members are expected to follow all relevant fisheries, boating and marine park rules, dive within their limits, respect their buddies, and represent the club positively on and off the water.
